Wearever Fountain Pen Restoration

Before shot: I spent some time this weekend working on an old Wearever. It was old, grungy, broken and needed some love. Who am I to keep this pen down? Some people will say that this pen is not worth the time or the energy to get back in the game...but I disagree. It's a solid writer and it only cost me a few bucks to get rolling again. I posted a better broken shot here on Thursday.

All it took was a new sac, some polish and a tiny bit of nib work to make this a happy pen (and me a happy owner.) All the scratches polished out (thanks to my new polishing kit.) Click for better views.

Now it is shiny!

Ignore the feathering, its the cheap paper but the nib is very smooth. Who knows...I might have put another 30 years of use into this pen over the weekend and that is a pretty good feeling. Don't worry I will be back tomorrow with the latest new pen that will last me 2 weeks! Cheers.

The Before Shots: A new Fountain Pen

Part of the fun of getting a fountain pen for a dollar is seeing what it's inside. It could be a shining star or it could be less than stellar.

Aha! A Gold(ish) nib that is fairly smooth. I will take that any day. A few ink stains that I am sure will come out. Should be a nice Wearever when I am done.

And a busted sac. No biggie, came out clean in two pieces. I didn't have to scrape out 50 years of crust and ink and whatever in there. The filler lever was in good shape, it should be a simple fresh sac, polish and enjoy. Some may argue that it doesn't really make sense to put a $4 sac in a $1 pen, but I disagree. I will get the afters out in another post once I finish it.

This has nothing to do with the post other than that is a camera shot of a camera looking at pens. Click for a better view and have a good day.

Not Another Wearever Fountain Pen

First off...my fellow pen blogger Nrepose over at Unposted put up some great shots of some work I did on his Sheaffer Cartridge. I have been doing a ton of repairs lately and it was a pleasure to get that pen back in writing mode for him. Post and pictures here!
He's running a great blog so be sure to keep an eye on it. Good Stuff.

Now to my pen and yes, it's another Wearever, in a few prior posts I went over my love for these pens and this one is no different. I think this one is the Wearever Supreme from the 60's... and supreme it is. This one also has a surprise...

Click the picture, yes that section has a clear feed on it. Lucite I believe. I cleaned it up here for your viewing pleasure. All shined up... it looks great, inked it looks like a clear feed with some ink on it and there's no getting around that. This one now has a fresh sac and is ready for another 40 years of use.

The paper was not a great choice here, but the pen does write very well. With a little Rose Cyclamen J. Herbin we are good to go. I love that they put a hood over the nib copying the styles of the times. It does class the joint up a little bit and we all can use a little of that every now and then. Good Pen. Have a nice Thursday!

Wearever....The Bastard of Pens

Wearever must feel like they were the crazy uncle with a prison history that no one talks about of the pen industry. I can't even find a wiki page for them. There's a Wiki page for Pi Day, but not one for Wearever. I both love and hate that they don't get any credit. This pen sat in my drawer for years untouched. My reply when asked was "oh, that's just a Wearever, now come over here and look at the "good" pens..." Until part boredom and part curiosity crept in and I decided to restore the old dog.

A simple tear down, ultrasonic bath, new sac and a good polishing was all that was needed to bring this one back to life. A fresh drink of Private Reserve Ebony Blue and I have a new friend. It's a very nice writing fountain pen that I have put into heavy rotation. (I don't really mean "friend" people.)

You know what? I am actually OK with Crazy Uncle Wearever. They remain cheap on Ebay and anytime I can find a 70-year old fountain pen that looks good and writes well for a few bucks... I will jump all over it... every single time. This will probably be the number 1 pen I write with this week and I could not be happier. Good Pen.

Moonman AKA The Camry

OK,  Camry MIGHT be a little bit of a stretch comparison.   Low cost and will run forever.  The Moonman M2 is a super fun Chines...
